Lex wanted to say the words so badly. He wanted that easy love Clark seemed to have with everyone, where love wasn't something as dangerous as a tightrope walk, or fragile as old crystal. Where love was like the warmth of summer, ever-present, and so there that you never considered when it would leave. It would always be.
He wanted to say it every time Clark turned just so, or laughed, or smiled, or got annoyed with him for putting a profit before what was right, or just brushed Lex's arm to let him know he was there. Lex wanted to say it, but the words always stuck in his throat. They were hard words, not ones he said often, if ever, and he was scared to jinx everything.
And then one night while they were watching some movie or other on Lex's couch, Clark lifted his head from Lex's shoulder and kissed Lex's cheek.
"I love you," he said quietly, peacefully, laying his head back down and brushing his thumb over the back of Lex's hand where their hands lay twined together on Clark's knee.
Something in Lex's chest shifted, a growing pressure that lifted like a kite in the June breeze.
He tightened his arm around Clark and released him, a tight hug, and kissed the top of his head. "I love you, Clark."
It was the easiest thing in the world.
